I specialise in creative direction and project management of books and websites, working primarily with publishers and authors. I spend a lot of time assembling creative A-teams and dreaming up ideas, some of which have eeked their way through to the realm of reality.
Last year I completed an MA looking at ways to bridge the gap between traditional publishing and digital publishing and since then I have been putting some of those ideas into practice. I’m particularly interested in finding ways to empower and educate authors so they can create and maintain their own online presence. I regularly run one-to-one ‘web surgeries’ both privately and in partnership with organisations like the Society of Authors and The Literary Consultancy. These one-to-one sessions give authors an opportunity to tackle any web-related issue – be it editing an existing website, creating dynamic content or getting to grips with Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networks.
Prior to going solo I was a Senior Production Controller at Penguin UK where I worked on hundreds of non-fiction titles under the Allen Lane, Penguin Classics and Reference imprints. Later, as Reference Editor, I oversaw Penguin’s academic subject dictionary list and, along with Press Art Director Jim Stoddart, conceived of and developed the Penguin On Design series which is still going strong today. I now do some consultancy work in between managing The Curved House (a creative agency and limited edition publisher).
